Some people I talk to wonder where ex – MLA Lisa Roberts is, and what she is up to now . . .

I recently had the opportunity to interview former MLA Lisa Roberts, in a phone conversation. Lisa Roberts is still advocating for affordable housing, and behaving as a general advocate for people, even though she is no longer an MLA. She is working as a consultant in the not-for-profit-sector primarily to advocate for affordable housing.

Lisa and I talked about what she misses about being an MLA, what she achieved during her time in office, and what she was hoping to achieve if she had won the federal seat for the NDP.

The Interview.

#1 – Do you miss being an MLA, and if yes, what do you miss about it?

She misses many parts of being an MLA. She misses helping people. The #1 thing she misses is being in the position to help people. She misses being able to get help for her work, from the NDP caucus and office. She misses writing newsletters, and writing member statements. Now she is figuring out where she can write, and how to write, without the backup of the MLA role.

#2 – Anything you feel you had achieved during your time in Politics that you are proud of and you will never forget?

Lisa Roberts is proud of assisting with changes through Employment Support and Income Assistance program (ESIA) and ways she could amplify the voices of people who do not get heard. She also assisted in one policy change through Metro Regional Housing Authority. Lisa helped secure stable and secure funding for the ALS Society of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

#3 – What You hoped to have achieved if you won the Federal Seat?

A lot of her focus as an MLA was on housing, and a lot of housing programs that happen locally, are federally funded. She is interested in advocating for more funding for housing, and being an MP would let her do that in Parliament. Lisa cares about Human Rights around the World. And was interested in following in the foot steps of Alexa McDonough to speak about, and work, on justice.

#4 – What are you doing now, that you are no longer an MLA, to continue to advocate for housing or doing to advocate for ending poverty??

Most of her work is in meetings with non profit organizations that are interested in setting up affordable housing. She is also involved with an organization called Happy City, as a consultant. It is a firm that grew up around how we can build community, foster well being and increase social connection.

I just want to end this article by saying “I personally have great memories of working with Lisa Roberts during her time as an MLA”. I served on her Electoral District Association in Halifax-Needham, and went canvassing door to door, with her, on a couple of occasions.

She is well missed by her past supporters and she will always be remembered as a great MLA!
