Readers, as you know, 5 months ago we had a snap provincial election
here in Nova Scotia, giving Tim Houston's PC government a second
term. As much as the PC’s got a second term in Nova Scotia I am
very happy to report that the NDP kept the Halifax Chebucto seat.
Whereas Krista Gallagher is the MLA who is replacing Gary Burrill,
I just want to take a moment here to remember Gary
Burrill’s days as MLA. This is a link to the many times I interviewed Gary Burill.
I have had the privilege of knowing Krista Gallagher for the past 6 months, and I just want to say that Krista is definitely the right person for the job of replacing Gary. I have learned that Krista 100% supports all the same political beliefs that Gary shared with me during his time as MLA. Krista spends her day to day life, as the Current Halifax Chebucto MLA feeling like she is full of energy and excitement to do the job of being an MLA.
I now invite you to read my interview with Krista Gallagher below.
Q#1 – You are a Brand New MLA in the House who just got elected in the 2024 Provincial Election, is that anything you would like to say about what your experience has been like so far with being an MLA? Examples – Transitioning from the line of work you use to do to being an elected official or now being 5 months later, what your experiences have been like so far?
Krista’s Answer – As a small business owner of Local Source, this business is also a community hub. Krista considers commutation as a transferal skill she has gained from her past employment of owning the small business. (Note - During my Conversation Krista gave me the reason for pointing this out as a transferal Skill because as part of her employment related responsibilities at local Source she use to keep in contact with framers and other Suppliers on a business type level for ordering products and nogating deals. She pointed out that now as an MLA she uses those skills from what she did for her work at Local Source to keep in touch with Community members) These skills include talking, writing, and consultation wish are important skills that come in handy in both lines of work, meaning her past employment of being a small business owner and in her current position of being an MLA. Krista reports that having this skill comes in handy when you are an MLA because thier is a lot of commutation within your own involved when you live day to day life working as an elected official.
Q#2 – In your Halifax/Chebuto riding, you Replaced Gary Burrill. Gary was a big supporter of wanting to see an end to poverty and seeing a day come where we do not need Food-Banks. How in general do you feel about replacing Gary Burrill in that respect?
Krista’s Answer – Krista remembers Gary as someone who was generous with time and advice. Krista is looking forward to grow more and learn more from Gary as time goes on. Like Gary, Krista believes in a Nova Scotia where no one is left behind. Krista agrees 100% that she has big shoes to fill to continue Gary’s great work.
Q#3 – When you read my BLOG, you pick up on facts like government being held accountable for their part on why we have so many people in this province suffering from various mental health issues and poverty. What are your views on this?
Krista’s Answer – Krista 100% agrees that in Nova Scotia we need to make mental health care a priority. Too many people in Nova Scotia cannot access mental health supports because they cannot afford private care.
Q#4 – The Income Assistance Rate in Nova Scotia is currently $1005.00 a month for the standard house hold rate, and some, if not many clients, are getting less then that amount depending on circumstances. The question here Do you support the fact that this kind of money is not enough money for people to live on? – Do you support the fact that a different type of system of receiving Income Assistance is needed – and do you Support that fact that Basic Guaranteed Income is the Solution?
Krista’s Answer – Krista and I both 100% agree that more support is needed. We both agree that people being expected to get by on little is not fair. We need an updated income assistance plan plus the support required. Claudia and the NDP have been calling for this for a long time, plus the NDP would like a study on what guaranteed income could look like in Nova Scotia.
Q#5 – Is there anything-else you would like to share about what your beliefs relating to poverty, mental health, and possible solutions?
Krista’s Answer – Kendall, I think you have asked great questions today. Krista expressed that she is thankful for my work on my BLOG. Krista is also thankful for the people of Halifax Chebucto.
I will end this BLOG post by letting readers know that I was very happy to have this opportunity to interview Krista Gallagher today.
