 Canadian Parliament Resumes

And , hopefully the feds will look at inflation during this sitting!

By Kendall Worth!

In a previous blog post, I wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asking for an update on the creation of a Disability Benefit. Since then, I have word that last Spring , the House of Commons, re-introduced the bill. I hope they will look at passing the bill in this fall sitting.

And in a second blog post I wrote to Chrystia Freeland, and told her I had concerns about people not having enough money to live on. Part of that letter said:

We live in hope that anything the federal Government can provide will be better. If the $2000 a month that was offered through CERB can make a comeback, that can help people out a a lot. Lately, I have been hearing that not only Income Assistance recipients have been experiencing affording life’s necessities as an impossibility, but other working folks have been feeling the pinch as well. The community of people I advocate for was expecting something similar to the CERB to be announced as part of this anti-inflation bundle and you did not announce anything that will help us. In the meantime, daily, I hear from people that it is becoming more and more expensive to travel to and from work, and live their day to day lives. If the Federal Government was able to provide $2000 a month during CERB, “Why can’t your government do anything now?”

Lately, in conversation, everyone agrees, that the thought of creating a Disability Benefit is a good one, but people are asking “Shouldn't right now be the time to look at Basic Guaranteed Income?”

And the following popped up on Twitter within the past week.

And I love the way this person was thinking was thinking when he said Tax Multi-millionaires and Billionaires.

Anyway I am writing today because over these past few months here in Nova Scotia, where I live, the homeless population has increased, there are more people dependent on foodbanks, and even some Middle Class folks are starting to feel the pinch. Also we are experiencing increasing grocery store prices.

Here in Nova Scotia, this summer, our provincial government call a rare summer sitting of the legislature and have did nothing to address poverty or inflation. and have not done one thing during this sitting to address poverty, or Inflation. In addition to our increasing poverty and homelessness, in Nova Scotia, I was also taking to some contacts I have in Ontario who brought to my attention that people in that province who depend on the Ontario Disability Support Program have been experiencing cuts to their allowances. Hearing news like that has the community-of-people-I-advocate-for worried that worse days are coming, if nothing is done to address this, and soon. If people in other provinces are having the same or similar problems that Income Assistance recipients in Nova Scotia are having, that builds the case for getting either the Disability Benefit, or Basic Income started. For an idea of what Basic Income could look like and for one story that builds the case for it, see https://worthmatters.blogspot.com/2022/08/interview-about-basic-income.html.

So Justin Trudeau maybe this idea of Taxing Multimillionaires and Billionaires is something that your government should consider.
