Disability Benefit Bill – Bill c22 to be brought back to Parliament on October 18th, 2022!

 By Kendall Worth!

The Disability Community says it is too early to say whether or not this is good news. There are still unanswered questions, and details of this benefit still need to be worked out.

However, evidence from twitter suggests it is going to move forward:

I previously wrote about the benefits of a Disability Benefit. However, recently, in conversation with members of the Disability Community, we identified some unanswered questions about this Disability Benefit:

  • For persons with disabilities, receiving the benefit, once it is created, who are also working Part-Time, will they be able to continue to working those jobs, without it affectring their benefit? For example: thoese receiving CERB during the First COVID restrictions, were allowed to keep the first $1000 a month from earnings before it affected their CERB.

  • How much allowance money will a Disability Benefit provide? Hopefully something much better the Standard HouseHold Rate of $950.00 a month provided through Department of Community Services in Nova Scotia) One hopes for an allowance that can be lived on.

  • And what will the application process for such a benefit look like? ? Will those, for example who already qualify for the Disability Tax Credit through Revenue Canada automatically qualify?

  • Will the amount received from a federal Disability Benefit be clawed back from provincial programs like The Employment Support and Income Assistance program, in Nova Scotia?

When you think about this Subject – here is another tweet:

A Good point is made!

Then, more recently, this got Tweeted!

Disability Community asks Is this Tweet a good sign that employment earnings will not effect our Disability Benefit?

It is now time to write to your MP to show your support for Bil-C22. Even though we still have many unanswered questions, this Disability Benefit is long overdue, especially if it is going to truly get working age people with disabilities, out of poverty. Nova Scotians with disabilities (at least the ones I talk to) say they want to be on Parliament Hill rallying in Support of this Bill on the 18th. Some of us will be there in person, and many although they cannot attend in person will be there in spirit!

When you write to your MP in support of this bill, you should point out some of the following:

  • The allowance money people receive from the benefit should be enough for people to live on.

  • The $2000 a month people were receiving on CERB, is an example of what those who qualify should be receiving on the Disability Benefit. The $2000 a month CERB made alot of difference in the lives of people who received it.

Lets hope something good is coming our way with the creation of this Disability Benefit.
