As we all know from our most recent visits to grocery stores, we continue to see prices increase and it appears that these days there is going to be no end to out-of-control inflation. I am typing up this article on Sunday January 29th 2023 in the evening. Friday January 27th 2023 was income assistance cheque day in Nova Scotia. Over this past weekend I heard from Income Assistance (IA) Recipients that while out doing their cheque day errands, they ended up having to put some groceries back, for the first time ever. IA recipients, that I am in touch with, have been telling me lately that they feel that grocery stores are just making money and getting rich off of poor people!
In the following tweet --an example is pointed out:
Even though this tweet is not directly about Nova Scotia, it is something that relates to the issue seen by those doing their cheque day errands last Friday. One person told me that when he went out grocery shopping he was prepared to spend $65.00 on exactly what he needed. When he got up to the cash on this months trip to the supermarket, he found out that the price of some of his items went up, and he ended up paying $90.50 in total, which means that he will not be able to pay his cell phone bill. As I have written about previously, we have an expected increase in food bank usage in 2023 . They are predicting a 60% increase in food bank usage this year. People are reporting seeing the beginning of this big increase. People are telling me that when they make theior food bank vcisit, even if they get there at 9:00am the line ahead of them is twice or Three times longer then it use to be. This is unacceptable.
As mentioned in this article income assistance recipients got a one time $250.00 payment in December. While inflation is out of control that $250.00 every month would help out a lot.
As the following tweet points out:
Even recently, $100.00 went a much longer way in the grocery store!
These days I believe we need to:
Get a Campaign started to increase the Income Assistance Rates,
Campaign to make sure C-22 passes and that the rate is a livable one
A campaign to stop/deal with inflation. If this out of control Inflation Continues, the day may come that middle class is using Food-Banks. We have got to stop this from happening!!
