The Upcoming Labour Day Event

By Kendall Worth!

Summer is soon coming to a close with the Labour Day weekend fast approaching. Every year, in Halifax, the Halifax-Dartmouth & District Labour Council hosts an event where activists, advocates, community members and workers of all sorts, come together. I myself spoke at the Labour Day Event in 2017. Past Labour Day events had a march from Victoria park to the Commons, The location of the event changed last year. They now March from the Nova Scotia Labour Board, 1601 Lower Water street, to Peace and Friendship Park across from the Westin Hotel. This story I once wrote, in the Nova Scotia Advocate, describes the real meaning behind Labour Day.

Welfare recipients whose jobs are connected the School Year calendar, are welcoming the arrival of Labour Day because this is the day that they see signs that the social isolation they have suffered all Summer is coming to an end. Also, they tell me, they are looking forward to getting back to having structure in their days.

Labour Day is a day of celebrating workers and what they contribute to society. Celebrating everything from education, training, access to income, disability issues, access to livable income, volunteer work, etc should be 100% included in the meaning of what Labour Day should be about.

Anyway...

One reason why I encourage welfare recipients to attend, is because attending the Labour Day event would give them an opportunity to see for themselves that there are working people out there who do not believe in the stigma about them.

I hope this years Labour Day event turns out to be a success!
