The Latest on All Together Link

By Kendall Worth!

I had just realized that it has been sometime since the last time I provided you readers with an update on how All Together Link is going. I do have people in the community who have not been to an event, or have not returned, ask me how it is going. So. I am doing this blog post to update you.

First – To Jog the memories of all of you regular readers and FYI for anyone who is new to reading my BLOG; one part of what I have been advocating for is solutions for people who experience social isolation and have low income. I raise awareness of how social isolation and poverty go hand in hand. I have written about solutions like social prescriptions, or social prescribing, Last year a committee got together and created the Mitigating Social Isolation Project, which was eventually renamed All Together Link.

So there is a mixture of good news, and not so good news, to report. I reported on our very successful Stir it up for the Holidays event, held in December, here. We held no event in January. In February we did a Board Games event at the Board Room Game Cafe, on Barrington St., which was well attended. In March we held Tools for Social Anxiety workshop, which saw only myself and and one other person show up. More people were registered but they were a no show.

This week’s event is at the Central Library on Tuesday from 1-3. Make a personalized stamp, or some jewellery – all materials included.

Our next events are not yet on the website – but will be soon! You will find them on Face Book. You heard it here first!

Someone to Go With.

Come and find out about free summer activities in Halifax/Dartmouth and maybe find a friend to go with, to a free concert or festival. Hoping to serve strawberry shortcake but will depend on availability in June.

The project has not accomplished all that we hoped. From attendance at these events we were hoping to form a community of mutual support. We thought if some of the same people showed up at events, they would eventually get to know each other then make connections within this community. But this has not been successful as each event that had an activity,  people came not to socialize but for the activity…

So -- Now we are trying something new and different! Every Wednesday Morning from 9:30am till 11:30am we are offering a Coffee, food and conversation, at the Halifax North Memorial Library on Gottingen St. Hopefully this will bring people together. Please come by, drop in...

The dream was originally to provide, those who depend on standing in line at their food banks and soup-kitchens, other options to be social. However, after we did lots of work getting the word out to places where people in poverty go, this has not happened.

Hopefully things will improve as the remainder of this year goes on!
