Summer ’26 Kicks off in Halifax with Canada Day Events

By Kendall Worth

Each summer I like to advertise and promote the free summer events which are taking place here in HRM.

As my regular readers will know, I am deeply concerned about the social isolation widely experienced in our community amongst people living in poverty, many of whom also live with disabilities or mental health challenges. I want to let people know what events are on offer locally that have no admission charge and are easily accessed by residents of HRM.  Many of these events take place on the Halifax and Dartmouth waterfronts and can be easily reached via public transit.  Hopefully by providing a list of such events, people in my community will be encouraged to get out and enjoy themselves along with others in the general public.

I appreciate that many people in our community live with high levels of anxiety, which can make going out alone and mixing in big crowds more stressful than fun. This is why, some years back we launched “Someone to Go With gatherings as part of the larger “Mitigating Social Isolation Project”. Unfortunately, we were only able to secure short-term funding for the project, but the Someone to Go With initiative was designed to encourage participants to identify friends with whom they could then step out together to different events and activities.

The list of Summer events is always varied and includes musical concerts, open-air theatre, circus type acts and more. Some are one-off, stand alone events such as fireworks or parades. Others are part of a larger program or festival, such as the annual Busker Fest and Jazz Fest.

Below I present the program for Canada Day 2026 activities this Wednesday.  And here is the link to the HRM site with more details. Hopefully as many people as possible will get out and enjoy these events.

I will share other programs and events through my BLOG over the course of the summer.
