By Kendall Worth!
For some time I have been writing and asking/proposing a project in Halifax that I called social prescribing or social prescriptions. You can check out these posts to see why the project is needed.
As this post most recently pointed out – we are now calling the project – mitigating (easing) social isolation. By the way, we are proposing to change the name again as we move forward. If you can think of a catchy name do let me know!
This article points out yet another reason why this project is needed. We are only starting off this project with the event details outlined below. As we move forward the organization is going to offer more opportunities for social interaction, like craft nights, singing or painting, improv or instruction in some indoor sports. It will also include some workshops on friendships and boundaries which the Dalhousie School of Social Work has offered to make part of the program.
Anyway in this BLOG post I bring you the details for the first Event hosted by the project.

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the vibrant cultural offerings our city has to offer, and we want to make sure that no one misses out due to financial constraints or a lack of company.
The purpose of this initiative, called “Someone to Go With” is to create an event where individuals living in poverty in Halifax, can connect and find friends, acquaintances, even a community, to attend various free city events, that take place in Halifax, in the summer.
By joining people from our community, living in poverty, at this event, you will have the chance to meet new people who share your interests, and who might enjoy fun, enriching, or entertaining experiences together. Whether it’s attending art exhibitions, concerts, community festivals like Afrifest Fest, Pride, or Buskers, or other events, we want to ensure that you have someone to go with you, to make your experience even more enjoyable. And we hope the event itself will be fun too! Please feel free to pass along invitations, or bring your friends.
We strive to foster a diverse and inclusive community, where everyone feels welcome and respected. Only rules are you cannot discriminate or use hate speech, and you cannot be aggressive/violent. No registration is required. Just come by!
Fingers Crossed that this First Event will be a success!
