A MIX OF GOOD NEWS AND NOT SO GOOD NEWS LEADING TO DISAPPOINTMENT

Province House finished up it’s first week of sitting for the spring session of 2024 and it turns out the Nova Scotia Minister of Finance released the Provincial Budget within the first 3 days of the House’s sitting.

As this post points out, there is a bit of good news coming for 60% of Income Assistance recipients in Nova Scotia. There are many questions, however, around who exactly the 60% of Income Assistance are, who will receive this $300.00 Increase. Following the budget, the government released this news. Questions people have include:

  • What about those Income Assistance clients who have documentation of their disability on file, however, are working part-time, within their abilities? Will they receive the $300.00 Increase or will they be disqualified?

  • Will Income Assistance recipients who cohabit with a Spouse (for more on what I mean see this post and Part#2) If they are in a romantic relationship and living together, will that disqualify them for the $300.00 increase?

  • What work is happening behind the scenes at Community Services to decide who will qualify and who will not?

  • Even though the one time $150.00 payment for those who will not qualify, will help, this is just a drop in the bucket. Why is there no general monthly increase for everyone else?

  • What-else is in the works to improve the Disability Support Program in Nova Scotia as mentioned in the government release?

Being allowed to keep $100 more of your earnings, is something to look forward to for those who are working while receiving Income Assistance. Community Services officials contacted yesterday were asked about those with disabilities who are working. According to the Director of Employment Support and Income Assistance, these with disabilities, who are working while receiving Income Assistance, should get the $300.00 increase. Everything else is just a wait and see thing. .. It is so difficult to believe that there is no general increase for everyone, after we have had a couple of years of out of control inflation and more and more homeless becoming visible to the public eye. That $150.00 one time payment, needs to be monthly for everyone else. Why isn't it?

Lets hope a better system is eventually coming!
